Muyil ruins (also known as Chunyaxche) can be found just off the highway 307 about 30 minutes south of Tulum. This is a great site to visit if you want to escape the crowds and explore at your own pace.
The main pyramid can easily be found from the site’s entrance. It is prohibited to climb the pyramid, but it is very impressive to look at. There are other structures to visit too, but be sure to take the path behind the main pyramid for the 15 minute walk through the lush jungle to the beautiful turquoise lagoon. On the way, there is a wooden observatory tower that you can climb to gain spectacular views over the jungle canopy.
Once you reach the lagoon, there are usually boat captains waiting who can take you on a tour of the Sian Ka’an biosphere reserve.
A small charge applies for admission to the ruins and an additional small charge for entry to the Biosphere Reserve.
