In a nutshell:
Chic, adults-only boutique hotel with a striking modern style located on the northern part of Tulum’s beaches. Excellent Asian-themed restaurant and lively bar. Recommended for young singles and couples.
Tulum is changing. The beaches just south of the Mayan ruins used to be scattered with just a few rustic beach cabanas, but Mezzanine is changing that with its inspired modern design and a lively party beat. It has one of the coolest bars in town, and the guestrooms are amongst the most coveted addresses for the in-crowd.
Despite being hip and design-oriented, it’s also one of the friendliest, up-beat hotels we’ve visited and there’s a welcome emphasis on good service.
Positioned just yards from the ocean, the guest rooms are eminently comfortable as well as being sleek and stylish. Each has a double height sleeping area and novel mezzanine level for additional guests or for lounging.
Fittings are of the highest quality and the ethos is definitely “less is more” (fashion junkies beware – you only get a short rail and a few hangers to store your vacation wardrobe).
Tulum is still free from conventional electricity, so there are no TVs or CD players in the rooms and no air-conditioning or phones either, but bring your laptop and (incredibly) you can be in touch with your office using the high speed wi-fi in the restaurant.
Mezzanine has just nine guest rooms; four Ocean View Rooms, three Ground Level Rooms and two Master Suites. These chic and stylish quarters are refreshing different to the typical beach cabanas in the area. They are still quite rustic (no TV, phones or air-conditioning here), but the sleek modern lines and minimalist decor add an air of city sophistication and elegance to the interiors. We love the high quality furnishings and inspired design of Mezzanine’s guest rooms.
The Buddha rooms are lower level basement style quarters without any views (although they do have windows), but the attractive decor and modern amenities make them a welcome option for a short stay when a budget is important. Ocean View rooms are spacious and airy, and can sleep up to three people using the sofa bed on the mezzanine level. The lavish Master Suites are a wonderful choice for an indulgent romantic vacation or a honeymoon.

The three Buddha Rooms are spacious and ultra modern. All have a king size bed and an open-plan bathroom. The rooms have no views but they do have a small window which allows in some natural light. There is good electrical lighting so the rooms don’t feel dark.
The open plan bathroom can be partitioned from the main bedroom by a red curtain which stretches from wall to wall. The bathrooms also exude style with cream mosaic wall tiles large rain shower and glass vanity.
Mezzanine has four Ocean View Rooms; each identical in amenities but with a different color scheme.
These guest rooms are located in the south section of this small hotel on a low rocky bluff above the ocean and divided from the bar and restaurant area by a small pool.
Every room faces the Caribbean and opens onto an attractive terrace.
The open plan loft area and double height ceiling make the rooms seem very light and airy. The windows are well screened and can be opened to allow the sea breezes into the room. There’s also a large ceiling fan high above the bed.
Upstairs there is a double futon-style sofa bed and a low table. The headroom is restricted in places, but this area feels light and airy due to the simple, bright decor and the window.
The stylish bathrooms are equipped with large walk-in showers and an attractive hardwood vanity unit. Blissfully soft bath towels and beach towels are provided for guests. Bottled water and jugs of purified water are provided daily.
The two Master Suites are some of the most desirable guest rooms in Tulum. Both suites are located on the second level of the hotel and have fabulous views of the beach and ocean from their large terraces.
These suites offer lots of space and feature a king size bed, large open plan bathroom with bathtub, rain shower and double vanity. In addition there is a small sitting area with a sofa and table.
The Master Suites are the epitome of contemporary elegance. Light decor predominates with cream stone floors and walls and shimmering mosaic tiles in the bathroom, accentuated by Mezzanine’s signature color of red here and there. Premium quality bed linens and towels along with finest toiletries add to the feeling of luxury.
The rooms feature an Ipod docking station.
Mezzanine’s Thai chef creates a dazzling selection of Asian dishes, including favorites such as Pad Thai and Massaman curry, Thai shrimp and green or red curries.
At lunchtime, the salads and wraps are also very popular and the whole menu is a breath of fresh air for travelers looking for something different but still exotic.
The gorgeous soft white sand beach stretches for miles south of the hotel. It’s possible to walk along the beach almost as far as the ruins of Tulum (the ruins are not accessible from the beach, but you can cut through to the road and walk to the entrance of the archaeological site in about 20 minutes).
Along the way are a few small hotels and restaurants and a scattering of fishing boats.
The hotel is slightly elevated from the beach and guests must walk down a short flight of steps to reach the sand.
There are a few rocks in the waterline at the foot of the steps, but just a few yards further down the coast the ocean bed is blissfully soft and rock-free, perfect for wading and swimming.
Mezzanine’s swimming pool is an unusual figure of eight shape, with stepping stones crossing the narrowest section.
It’s not huge, but it is deep and crystal clear and incredibly inviting.
Several areas around the property have been designated for undisturbed sun-worshipping.
Wooden decks are laid out with cushioned sun loungers, and several brightly colored hammocks are strung between the palm trees on the terraces below. All enjoy heavenly ocean views!

By air
The nearest airport is Cancun – by road the journey to Mezzanine takes about two hours.
Driving directions from Cancun
From Cancun airport, head south following the signs to Playa del Carmen, Playacar and Tulum on the highway #307.
You will pass Playa del Carmen and Playacar and also the entrance to the ruins at Tulum. Turn to the left at the major crossroads with the road to Coba. So, when you see a turning to the right to Coba, you should turn left. You will be heading directly towards the sea on a very straight road. The road bears right at the coast and there is a turning to the left (north). You should then turn left and after around 1 mile you’ll see Mezzanine on your right
