It’s not all about the beach here, although the ocean is crystal clear and the sands are soft and cool to the touch, this is a tropical paradise surrounded by lagoons and mangroves. Take one of the early morning wildlife tours by boat and you might spot crocodiles, turtles, deer and dozens of species of birds. Walk for miles along the coast, snorkel the reefs or dive the cenotes, swim with sea turtles or explore ecological reserves; it’s all close by.
Each of the Rosewood’s accommodations allows guests to immerse themselves in this serene location. You’ll arrive at your suite by boat, and every room features a deck overlooking the lagoon or the beach furnished with a private heated plunge pool. Inside, even the basic room category is full of indulgent treats such as Bose sound systems, Nespresso coffee machines, deep soaking tubs and outdoor moon showers.
For a special occasion, we recommend the lavish Overwater Lagoon suites. Seemingly suspended above the water, these suites offer mesmerising vistas from every angle. Beach lovers should book one of the Beachfront Studio suites, from which they can watch the changing hues of the Caribbean from dawn to dusk. There are also connecting suites, two and three bedroom Presidential Suites, and capacious townhouses for families.
For a resort with just 130 suites, the facilities are impressive. Two gorgeous swimming pools, a full service spa, kids club, tequila bar and gourmet restaurants are on the property and the prestigious Mayakoba championship golf course is adjacent. Any one of the sublimely comfortable suites at the Rosewood Mayakoba would make a heavenly vacation spot. The Lagoon Studio Suites are the “standard rooms” here, and they are beautiful, with spacious interiors and a fabulous terrace and plunge pool overlooking the tranquil canals and lagoons. These suites can accommodate a family with two small children.
For honeymooners, we suggest the Beachfront Studio suites, with their picturesque Caribbean views, or the majestic and one-of-a-kind Deluxe Overwater Lagoon suites. Spa lovers could consider the Island Suites, each of which has its own treatment cabin where guests can enjoy therapeutic treatments or relaxing massages.
Families wanting to be close to the beach should take a look at the Deluxe Ocean view suite, or one of the two or three bedroom Presidential suites. For younger children, the Deluxe Lagoon suites offers a sitting room with a sofa bed that can be closed off from the bedroom for privacy.

Casa Laguna
Three bedroom, three bathroom villa overlooking the lagoon with floor to ceiling windows, chefs kitchen, living room, media room, private pool and dining deck. Interior 6000 sq ft, exterior 3500 sq ft.
Nestled by the canals and lagoons of the Mayakoba reserve, these impressive suites are full of indulgent treats. These are the entry level rooms at the Rosewood Mayakoba, but they are far from standard. You’ll arrive by boat and climb the steps to the waterside terrace. To the rear, there’s a pathway that is served by golf cart shuttles to transport you to the resort’s restaurant, spa and beach club.
The Lagoon Suites can have one king or two queen beds, and can accommodate up to two adults and two children. The spacious bathroom features a tiled soaking tub and a huge walk-in shower, as well as an outdoor moon shower. Within the suite, there is a dining or working area (all suites are equipped with wireless internet access). You may also enjoy room service on the shady terrace outside.  The terrace provides the perfect location for contemplation and relaxation, with a heated plunge pool and comfortable sun lounges.
The Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suites are ideal for nature lovers and romantics. We think that the tranquility of this privileged location within the ecological reserve makes the Overwater Lagoon Suites unforgettable. Imagine watching the dawn break and listening to the cacophony  of sounds as the birds, ducks and wildlife awake. You may see baby turtles popping their head to the surface for air, or catch a glimpse of one of the resident crocodiles.
Inside, the Overwater Lagoon suites are spacious (a little bigger than the Lagoon Suite Studios) and boast a furnished terrace and plunge pool. With one king bed, these accommodations are perfect for a couple.
Stay in one of the Rosewood’s Beachfront Studio Suites and you can wake up to this blissful view each morning. Within strolling distance of the Punta Bonita beach club, restaurant and pool, this is an idyllic location for beach lovers.
Each suite has a king bed and can accommodate a maximum of 2 adults and one child. For parents with older children or extended families, adjoining suites are available. The Beachfront Studio suites have a lavish bathroom similar to the one in the Lagoon Suite Studio, but without the outdoor shower.
The exquisite Casa del Lago restaurant is located by the main pool, and serves contemporary Italian cuisine in the evenings, and a gourmet buffet breakfast each morning.
Light lunches to suit the tropical climate and poolside ambiance are available during the day.
The beachside Punta Bonita restaurant is a popular choice for lunch al fresco. Tapas, seafood and even pizzas can be enjoyed here, and the views are spectacular.
In the main section of the property, the Casa del Lago bar is a tempting retreat for pre-dinner cocktails, but guests should also make time to visit the Agave Azul Tequila and Sushi bar. When in Mexico…!
The Punta Bonita beach club is a haven for sun seekers and sea lovers. This beautiful stretch of coast is uncrowded and offers cool white sand for barefoot strolls.
Adults can enjoy tropical cocktails and delicious lunches in the poolside restaurant, whilst their children are entertained in the Rosebuds kids club nearby.
There are ample sun chairs for relaxing either on the sands or by the pool, including shady cabanas. Transportation between the beach club and the lobby or guests rooms is provided by complimentary golf cart shuttles.
The Rosewood’s main pool is huge, and very enticing. It is located close to the lobby and the Casa del Lago restaurant. There are different sections, including jetted sections and shallow relaxation areas. With just 130 suites on the property, there’s plenty of room for everyone.
A second generously sized pool is positioned right by the beach at the Punta Bonita Beach Club. Canopied cabanas with sun loungers are provided by both pools and are an ideal refuge when the sun is high.
The Rosewood Spa “Sense” is an expansive complex featuring sauna, steam rooms, plunge pools and meditation areas. There are twelve specialist treatment rooms for individuals or couples, with each area designed to enhance the serene experience.
The spa occupies a private island, shared only with the eight Island Suites. Guests who intend to make the most of the superb spa facilities should consider reserving one of the Island Suites, where the accommodations include a private treatment deck.
How to get here
By air
The nearest airport is Cancun – by road the journey to Hotel Esencia takes about 90 minutes.
Driving directions from Cancun
From Cancun airport, head south following the signs to Playa del Carmen and Tulum on the highway #307. You will pass Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras.
After passing Puerto Aventuras, watch for the large sign marking the entrance to the Xpu-ha Palace Hotel on your left. There are then two small, rough roads exiting the highway to your left.
The entrance to Hotel Esencia is the first of these roads and is marked by a white gate house. The entrance is next to the road to Al Cielo (marked by a blue sign) and before the Copacabana hotel.
