In a nutshell:
High on our list of favorite beaches in Mexico, usually ideal for swimming and snorkeling, with good dive sites just offshore.  Quirky and charming casitas with sea views, often with windows and walls open to the breezes.  Rates include 3 meals a day, with wonderful seafood and beautifully presented dishes.

Desert island hideaways don’t get much better than idyllic Majahuitas Resort. The hotel’s 18 acres are actually part of the mainland, but because there are no roads to the area the only access is by sea.  And so your vacation begins with a leave-your-worries-behind-you boat trip along the stunning coastline of the Bay of Banderas.

Away from Puerto Vallarta, the sea becomes clearer and blue-green. Twenty minutes later the boat arrives at one of the most picturesque coves on the coast. Seven casitas cling to the shoreline and slopes of the one third of a mile long beach, each casita having a perfect sea view.  We love the airy rooms, the hammocks overlooking the bay and the handcrafted furniture. Each casita is individually designed and, though all are close to the beach and main building, their positioning ensures a high level of privacy.

Waking to the sound of birdsong and the caress of tropical breezes is sublime. Guests tend to spend most of their days on the blissful beach, where the only distraction is the often daily visits by the snorkelling tours from town (who cannot be prevented from landing on the beach but who are not offered any services). They usually stay for an hour or two, after which the tranquillity returns.

To describe the resort as simple or rustic is deceptive. While it’s true that there are no televisions, telephones or air-conditioning (in fact the hotel is mostly solar powered), the resort boasts gourmet food and extraordinary service.

Evening meals are candlelit occasions, served beachside with beautifully presented dishes worthy of any five star restaurant in town. Delicious and freshly prepared breakfasts and lunches are also included in the nightly rates.

We’d highly recommend Majahuitas for romantics and honeymooners (the hotel has also hosted complete wedding ceremonies). It’s also one of the best places we’ve found for pure relaxation.

Rooms

Blissful days at Majahuitas begin as the sound of birdsong and the lapping of waves on the shore invades your dreams.  Step onto the deck and you feel the warmth of the early sun and the freshness of the air. The moment is enhanced by the discovery of hot coffee or tea delivered to your casita, one example of the unobtrusive and thoughtful service that complements this secluded resort so well.

Our favorite memories are often of these first few hours watching the early sunlight on the waves and contemplating the promises of the day.  After breakfast by the beach, the lure of the sands and crystal clear ocean draws guests away from their rooms. With snorkeling and kayaks both available your days can be active, though an added pleasure lies in the knowledge that, if you wish, you can simply spend the day in a hammock with a good book.

As darkness falls the pathways are lit by flickering candles and mark the way to a romantic waterside meal. The perfect day can end with a beachside bonfire or a stroll on the sands and the anticipation of drifting to sleep to the sound of the ocean.

Inside your casita you’ll find all the amenities required for days of idyllic relaxation. Each has a delightful sitting area, open to the sea breezes but providing some welcome shade, and a hammock for blissful siestas.  Furnishings are enchantingly simple and largely handcrafted; wood and tile predominate.  Naturally you won’t find televisions or telephones here – an advantage for those wishing to escape from the trappings of city life. We defy even the most hardened workaholic to think of their office while staying here.

The casitas vary in size and can sleep from two to four people. Some have couches that convert to beds suitable for children, in addition to one or two bedrooms.  Each bedroom is provided with a fine mosquito net suspended from the ceiling which can be draped over the bed as dusk falls.

Note that there are no electrical sockets in the rooms for hairdryers or other appliances.

We heartily recommend these rustically charming accommodations for honeymooners, romantics, and those in search for an ecologically friendly vacation.

The Beach House, as its name suggests, is located on the beach. This doesn’t take away from its privacy however, as the owners have thoughtfully planted shrubbery in front of it. It is also located closest to the main building, so you don’t have to go far for your margaritas and cold beers!

Due to the proximity to the beach and the additional child’s bed, the Beach House is a favorite with couples with a young child. It’s possible to watch children playing on the beach from the deck, and the casita is within earshot of the restaurant, so parents aren’t restricted to staying in the casita with their children in the evenings.

This casita has a double bedroom and a small bedroom with single bed, ideal for a child. It also has a large living area with a wrap around terrace. As with all casitas there is a hammock on the terrace, where you can laze looking out to the Ocean if the sun gets too strong!  The Beach House has a conventional indoor bathroom with shower.

The deck of the house is a great place to relax; you have the pleasures of the gorgeous beach and the ocean, all in the privacy of your own shaded terrace. You’ll find your hammock strung up positioned perfectly for a siesta, with a spectacular view from dawn to dusk.

Chula Vista – or ‘pretty view’ is a truly understated name! Set higher up than the other casitas, nestled in amongst the trees, this casita has an amazing view of the whole resort and Majahuitas’s beach.  This casita boasts one of Majahuitas’ wonderfully rustic outdoor bathrooms, from here whilst in the shower you can enjoy a beautiful view in complete privacy – an unforgettable experience.

Chula Vista offers a romantic King size four post bed – from here you can lie back and enjoy the ocean view if you wish. It also has a built in couch which folds down and makes an ideal bed for a child. There is a small living area with the standard Majahuitas hammock in prime position looking out to sea.

Sunset House with its two bedrooms and spacious living area is ideal for families. Its location nestled high up in the trees allows the casita amazing views of the water and passing boats.

Sunset House has two bedrooms adjacent to each other, one with king bed and the other with queen bed, making it ideal for families or two couples sharing. As with all the casitas at Majahuitas, you can enjoy a stunning sea view from your hammock on the balcony if the stresses of beach life just get too much!

From the terrace of Sunset House you can watch the activity on the beach and even spot passing dolphins, whales or manta rays. And, as its name implies, the sunsets are incredible.

This casita enjoys a wonderful outdoor bathroom, a place where you can truly feel at one with nature whilst taking a shower (yet still very private).

Los Mangos, named after the hotel’s nearby mango trees, has three bedrooms: a king size bed both upstairs and downstairs, plus a small single room upstairs (ideal for a family traveling with a nanny). There is a small bathroom upstairs, and a full tiled bathroom with shower downstairs. There is also a large sitting area which receives a gentle breeze from the trees in front, a great place to cool off on a hot day.

The downstairs bedroom in casita Los Mangos has a canopied king bed and large windows (one of which is open to the sea breezes). This casita has a large tiled bathroom downstairs and a separate and spacious living room where guests can enjoy their morning coffee.

Two further bedrooms are upstairs, along with a half bathroom. One bedroom has a king bed, and one has a double bed. Both bedrooms have walls open to the breezes, surrounded by a large patio that enjoys beautiful views of the sea through the trees.

Los Mangos is one of the largest houses at Majahuitas and can easily accommodate a large family or a group of friends. It is close to the restaurant and beach, and so is convenient for those with children.

Jungle House has a wonderful swing bridge as access and lots of tropical character. This is the only casita with a palapa style roof and has a mostly wood interior.  Jungle House feels very private as you are surrounded only by trees and the sound of the waves.

The Swiss Family Robinson would have felt perfectly at home here in the Jungle House! It has a king size bed downstairs, along with a double bed in a loft room accessible by a ladder – which is fantastic for children as it has a real sense of adventure.  There’s also a spacious sitting area with hammock – from here you can see sand, palm trees and the ocean. The bathroom is of a conventional style – tiled with a shower cubicle.

Casita Bouganvilia is a romantic casita with a king bed. It is set back on the hillside with wonderful views of the beach and ocean. This is a very open-style casita, with a spacious living room and elevated sleeping area.
This casita has its own special bridge and flower-decked walkway as access; but is only a short walk from the beach.

Casita Bouganvilia has a large living area and terrace that catches the sun in the morning and has wonderful views of the beach and the ocean. As the sun and the heat rise, the hammock becomes an enticing and shady place to relax and enjoy the sea breezes.  The casita has an elevated sleeping area with a canopied king size bed divided from the living area by a curtain. The bathroom has a tiled shower with a lovely ocean view.  The terrace in casita Bouganvilia is the perfect place to enjoy the early morning coffee that’s delivered to your room. The view of the bay is breathtaking.

Los Arcos is situated on the far corner of the beach, and is a great place for families or two couples sharing. This casita has its own private patio area for soaking up the sun.  The living area is open to the sea breezes and is just a few feet above the beach at the far end of the bay.

Los Arcos has two identical bedrooms, each with a canopied king bed. At the far end of each bedroom is a spacious bathroom with wall shower, whilst a sunny living area connects the two bedrooms. This means that two couples can share the casita and retain their privacy and enjoy plenty of space.

There are two spacious, tiled bathrooms in Los Arcos – each attached to a bedroom – that are completely separate from one another. There is a shower cubicle with single vanity unit, and both have large, open windows that allow you plenty of opportunity to enjoy your tropical surroundings.  And of course, each bedroom has a glorious sea view!

Cliff House is the newest and largest of the casitas at Majahuitas. Its location, high on the cliff, affords this casita breathtaking views but also means that it is not suitable for those who don’t want to climb many steps, and the sheer drops from the terraces means that it is also unsuitable for families with young children.

It has three bedrooms, one with a king, the second with a queen and a third attic bedroom with two twin beds that can also make a king. Consequently, it can accommodate up to 6 people. Guests staying in Cliff House have the option of dinner in their casita, if they choose not to go down to the restaurant (room service is not available in the other casitas).

Cliff House is a favorite with many repeat guests at Majahuitas, but because of its unique properties it will only be allocated to those specifically requesting this casita.

Cliff House has a spacious living area open to the sea breezes, with plenty of room for a family group to relax and dine. Bedroom one, with a king bed, is just to the right of this photograph and bedroom two, with a queen bed, is in the background.

The queen bedroom has a bed that is partly built into the rocks. It also has an en-suite half bathroom. The main bathroom is accessed from the living area (and also directly from the second bedroom) and has a large tiled shower. Cliff House also has an outdoor shower with a great view.

The loft ladder leads to a third bedroom with two twin beds that can be converted to a king. The stairs and walkway above the living area provide access to a delightful balcony with a birds-eye view of the resort and the cove. The outdoor shower at Cliff House is accessed from the terrace and enjoys amazing views of the pretty cove.

restaurant

Beautifully presented dishes and innovative menus surprise and delight visitors to this secluded paradise. We reckon it is worth a visit here for the food alone, and we’re not surprised to hear that many restaurateurs from fine establishments in Puerto Vallarta choose to escape to Majahuitas for weekend breaks.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the nightly rates at the resort, and the restaurant caters exclusively for hotel guests.  Breakfast and lunch are served on the patio areas by the beach, where individual tables are shaded by blue umbrellas. To start the day, fresh fruits and juices, eggs American or Mexican style, bacon or sausages, granola, toast and jam are on offer from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday a special brunch buffet features eggs, pancakes, French toast, toast, jams and jellies.

Guests are tempted back to the tables at lunchtime for such delights as empanadas filled with tuna or red snapper, chimichangas, shrimp cocktails, fresh fish and ceviches, rice and pasta salads.

Blissful evenings at Majahuitas begin with cocktails on the beach at sunset and lead to romantic three course dinners illuminated by candlelight. Guests can choose intimate tables on the patios, watching the moonlight dance on the water and feeling the fresh sea breezes. Others may choose to mingle with their fellow guests around a lively communal table, discussing the day’s activities. (Majahuitas is a great place for parties of friends or families traveling together as there is plenty of space for groups to get together, yet ample opportunities for privacy.)

A mouthwatering menu is posted on a chalkboard every day. Chilean producers are favored in the resort’s wine list and a wide choice of imported liqueurs and spirits are also available. Note that vegetarians can be very well catered for (please advised of any dietary restrictions when booking).

As the meal ends, the staff may prepare a bonfire on the sands. Romantic dinners on the beach are a specialty here. Then guests linger under the stars until late in the night, full of the pleasures of this enchanting resort.

beach

This is the desert island beach of everyone’s dreams – white sands and crystal clear sea backed by swaying palms.  We’ve seldom found the Pacific more alluring than in this pretty cove. The sandy shore shelves gradually into the ocean, making the beach safe for children.

Choose your spot on the sands and you’ll be provided with beach chairs and a sun canopy.  The service is just perfect too; staff are always lurking in the background, but without being intimidating, and will wander past and ask if you’re in need of a cold drink every so often (Robinson Crusoe would have killed for this luxury!)

Of course, there are more energetic ways to enjoy the natural attractions. Snorkeling in the area is excellent (equipment is available at the hotel at no extra cost) and divers flock to the dramatic Majahuitas trench just offshore.  For a few hours in the middle of the day the snorkeling trips from town may anchor in the bay, with passengers swimming to the beach, but for the rest of the day the beach is gloriously empty.

Guests can also take advantage of the hotel’s kayaks and children’s inflatables to cool off in the usually placid waters. This is also one resort where you don’t have to be first up in the morning to enjoy a quiet swim.

How to get here

How to get here

Majahuitas Resort is located on the Bay of Banderas about 13 miles south-west of Puerto Vallarta. It is accessible only by sea. The hotel offers complimentary boat transfers from La Boca de Tomatlan for guests staying for 4 nights or more, and will meet guests arriving by air at Puerto Vallarta airport. For guests staying one to three nights, the same airport greeting and boat transfer service can be arranged at extra charge.  Water taxis are available throughout the day (9am to 5:30pm) at la Boca, and the cost is around 10 USD one-way per person. The twenty minute transfer by boat along the beautiful coastline of the Bay of Banderas will be one of the highlights of your stay and is a wonderful way to start a vacation.

Due to the necessity of boat transfers, it is strongly recommended that guests try to schedule their arrival in Puerto Vallarta as early in the day as possible and before 5pm. Transportation to the resort is not provided after dark, and it must be remembered that flight delays can occur and customs procedures may be lengthy. If late arrivals are necessary then we would recommend staying in town one night before transferring to Majahuitas.

You will be greeted on arrival and the hotel staff will assist you in arranging a land-based taxi to La Boca de Tomatlan (30 to 45 minutes; fare approx $40 US) from where the hotel’s launch will transport you to the resort (journey time 20 to 30 minutes.

Note that the easiest way ashore at the resort is to walk through the shallow water from the boat, so wearing shorts for arrival would be ideal. However, the staff are well used to transferring all types of goods and passengers from these boats, so rest assured that you won’t get wet if you don’t want to!
