Izamal, a colonial town of striking yellow facades, lies within easy reach of Merida and can be visited easily as a half day trip from that city, or in conjunction with other sights such as Tixkokob, Mayapan or even on the to Chichen Itza.
Its amazing monastery was visited by the Pope during his visit to the area in 1993.
