Quaint Patzcuaro is just one hour from Morelia and is the scene of the most fervent celebrations of the “Day of the Dead”. There’s plenty to see in the historic town and it is the perfect base for exploration of the the land of the Tarascans and Purepecha Indians, a region rich in history and natural treasures.
Whilst here, we recommend visiting the archaeological sites of Tzintzunzan and Ihuatzio and the nearby villages for to watch artisans at work and purchase direct from the source. Santa Clara del Cobre (copper and silver ware) and Tocuaro (wooden masks) are must-sees.
Don’t miss trying the exceptionally good regional dishes too (the restaurant at the Mansion Iturbe on Plaza Vasco de Quiroga is one of our favorite places to dine). We suggest the charales janitzio or small fried whitefish, a famous local dish, and corundas, tasty triangular tamales.
