This colossal city (one of the largest in the world) has a wealth of attractions for visitors, including world-class museums and incredible archaeological sites.  Even a short stay can be very rewarding – just a half day walking tour around the Zocalo will encompass centuries of history as you visit the Cathedral, National Palace and the Aztec ruins of Templo Mayor.   Two or three days here will allow you to take in many of the must-sees and will leave you with everlasting memories.

Here are our suggestions for seeing the highlights, according to how long you are staying:

Day 1 – Take a cab or subway to the Zocalo and explore on foot the Cathedral, National Palace, and the ruins and museum of Templo Mayor.  If time permits, walk to the Alameda and Bellas Artes via Avenida Madero (0.7 miles).

Day 2 –  Day trip to Teotihuacan.  Evening show of the Ballet Folklorico at Bellas Artes, if available (usually Wednesday and Sunday)

Day 3 – Visit the National Museum of Anthropology and Chapultepec Park.  Tour the castle or visit the zoo.  The Museum of Modern Art is nearby too.

Day 4 – Take a tour to Xochimilco (it’s at its most lively on a Sunday)

Day 5 – Visit Coyoacan, including the Museum of Frida Kahlo and the house where Trotsky died.  There are excellent restaurants for lunch or dinner.
