In a nutshell:
Upscale beachfront property with pools, spa, fine dining restaurants. Romantic accommodations, some with plunge pools, some family suites. Great location on Playa la Ropa, good for beach strolling and close to town.
Viceroy Zihuatanejo is a wonderfully romantic property which comes pretty close to our idea of perfection. The guest rooms capture all of the colors and charms of this richly-textured country and the suites include some of the most luxurious accommodations you’ll find anywhere.
Lush tropical gardens stretch right to the sands, where you’ll find the surprisingly sophisticated palapa-roofed restaurant la Villa and an engaging boat-shaped bar. A further restaurant la Cantina has tables spilling out onto the sands and serves Mexican dishes and seafood.
From the sweeping sands of Playa La Ropa (rated as one of the finest beaches in the country) all you can see of the low rise hotel is a few palapa shades amidst the palm trees. But in the evening this is transformed into a magical paradise of glowing lanterns, fine wines and award-winning menus.
The ambience of Viceroy Zihuatanejo is just perfect for a beach resort; relaxed and low key in the daytime, enchantingly elegant in the evening. Children are accepted only in a few of the accommodations (Garden Suites and two bedroom Beach Suites) so it’s a good choice if you’d like to bring the family but not be overwhelmed by crowds of youngsters.
And although the Viceroy Zihuatanejo has now grown to encompass a total of seventy rooms and suites it still has all the charm and intimacy of a boutique hotel.
Visualize your dream home by the ocean, nestled amidst the palm trees and within hearing distance of crashing waves. Now imagine how you would design your favorite room; maybe cool and sophisticated with pale walls and marble floors, or perhaps tropically vibrant with the colors of the sand, the sea and equatorial blossoms.
Each of the guest rooms in the Viceroy Zihuatanejo captures the essence of Mexico and the lifestyle of the tropics. Ochre walls and wicker furniture contrast with plump white cushions and delicate nets draped over simple four poster beds. Occasional shocks of primary colors are used to bring life to fabrics and highlight architectural details.
Deluxe rooms are spacious split-level quarters with a sitting area and a balcony or terrace with a hammock. These rooms are dotted around the original section of the resort and can be either ground floor or second floor.
The Lagoon section features indulgent suites, all with large balcony and private plunge pool. These suites, together with the beautiful one-bedroom Beach Suites (which also have plunge-pools, terraces and ocean views) and of course the incredible Presidential Suite, are the top choice for couples.
Children are accepted in the Garden Suites and the Two Bedroom Beach Suites. These large suites all have two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus large terraces or balconies with a plunge pool.

The two bathrooms are well designed and spacious. Each bathroom has a walk-in shower and either a single or double vanity. The second bedroom generally has a queen bed and is a light, airy room with plenty of hanging space and an en-suite bathroom.
These suites are very comfortable for two couples traveling together, or families visiting in the low season. You get all the features of superior rooms, but with an extra bedroom and lots of living space.
For the ultimate indulgence, choose one of the Viceroy Zihuatanejo’s spacious Beach Suites. These fabulous quarters are located right by the ocean and offer a large terrace with plunge pool and sea view. The bedrooms are light and airy with a tropical decor and beautiful furnishings.
Each Beach Suite has a private terrace on the ground floor or second floor that’s furnished with a wonderful double sized hammock. From the infinity-edged plunge pool you can watch the boats in the bay and contemplate another day in paradise.
Perfect for two couples or a family, the magnificent two bedroom Beach Suites are some of the finest accommodations at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo. Each bedroom is furnished in exotic style and has an indulgent bathroom. The suite also has a generously sized terrace facing the ocean.
The large terraces are equipped with sun loungers and a double sized hammock positioned in a shady spot for lazy siestas. Each suite also has its own private plunge pool.
The second bedroom also has a king bed and private bathroom. There is a sliding door between the two rooms that can be locked from either side, so it works well for either two couples or even for a family with young children.
The Presidential Suite at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo is a two bedroom suite with an incredible open-air living area that offers panoramic views of the bay. This sublimely comfortable terrace is so enticing that guests spend most of the day here.
It is furnished with a private plunge pool and a wet bar and is delightfully shady.
La Villa is one of the Viceroy Zihuatanejo’s two outstanding restaurants and serves fine International cuisine under a magnificent palapa roof, with more tables spilling out under the stars.
It’s a cool and casual lunchtime rendezvous that transforms into an intimate and romantic setting by night. The service is always exemplary and the food is a delight.
La Cantina offers Mexican and Mediterranean cuisine in a more casual beachfront setting, with some tables even set in the sand. It’s open for lunch and dinner and there’s often live music during the evening.
This is a wonderful choice for your first evening in Zihuatanejo. What could be better than enjoying an unsurpassed view of the ocean while waiting to be served incredible local cuisine cooked using the finest ingredients?
Hedonistic days can be spent under the Viceroy Zihuatanejo’s palapa shades – you can even dine on the beach, and it’s the perfect spot for a cocktail at sunset. Bar service stretches to the sun loungers in the daytime and we can heartily recommend the freshly squeezed papaya juice as the tropical cure for any over indulgences the night before.
Water sports are available for the energetic; the hotel has catamarans available for guests, and water-skiing or other activities can be arranged at the Tour Desk. Be warned that there is sometimes a strong undertow in the bay and the sea can be dangerous.
The idyllic long beach stretches for miles and is perfect for strolling. There are numerous small hotels and restaurants along Playa la Ropa and it’s also possible to arrange water sports on the bay too.
A mock aqueduct spills a fountain of water into the main (original) swimming pool and creates a popular spot for cooling off in the midday heat. Another favorite hideout is the swim-up bar (try one of the delicious freshly squeezed fruit juices – we can recommend the papaya).
Most of this pool’s surface and the surrounding terraces are shaded by tall palm trees and tropical foliage, so it’s a nice place to retreat to when the sun climbs in the sky. There are four other pools at the Viceroy Zihuatanejo, so there’s always plenty of space for everyone.
A second pool lies adjacent to the beach and within sight of the ocean, near to La Cantina bar and restaurant. There’s also a small pool by La Barca (formerly Orlando’s bar) in the middle of the resort.
There are two more pools (including a children’s pool) by the tennis courts. The adults’ pool here is ideal for lap swimming and is usually very quiet. It’s 60 feet long and ideal for the serious swimmer.
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo airport (ZIH) is about 10 miles away, and the journey by car takes about 20 minutes.
Driving directions
