In a nutshell:
Luxurious hacienda hotel situated within easy reach of Merida and close to several archeaological sites. Fabulous rooms and suites with lots of historic charm, two swimming pools, excellent spa with traditional Mayan treatments, and one of the region’s best fine dining restaurants. Ideal for romantic weekends and exquisite sightseeing trips.
The Hacienda Xcanatun fills you with a sense of history of the days of Henequen production. This hotel has skillfully combined the traditional with the opulent, with the result that in staying here guests feel pampered, whilst still getting a feel for the history of this part of Mexico.
It is hard to believe that you could find such a relaxing, tropical retreat in such close proximity (just a few minutes by car) of the vibrant city of Merida. Simply taking a stroll around the hotel grounds, or relaxing on your shady terrace for a while, will immediately relax and refresh the most worn out traveler. For the ultimate in relaxation, have a traditional Mayan massage in your own room, or in the gorgeous spa.
All rooms at Hacienda Xcanatun are comfortable, carefully and atistically decorated, and have such exquisite attention to detail that it’s very unlikely you will want for anything whilst staying here. Service is excellent without being intrusive, from the poolside to the restaurant to housekeeping.
Hacienda Xcanatun is a great choice whether you’re keen on getting to know this part of the Yucatan with its history and its people, or just want to stay in a beautiful hotel to relax and chill out for a while. Highly recommended, particularly for a romantic break.
There are just 18 rooms and suites at the Hacienda Xcanatun, each one lovingly restored or re-built to blend perfectly with the architectural style of the original Hacienda.
The accommodations are set out spaciously amidst three acres of lush gardens, palm trees and ponds. All three room types are beautifully luxurious, offering excellent amenities and total comfort.
You will find a mini-bar, room safes, air conditioning, fans and huge luxurious bathrooms in each room.

Master Suite
4 with king bed and one with 2 double canopy beds, sitting area, bathroom with shower and either hydrotherapy tub or large tub, private or shared terrace.
Each room at this hotel is individually and beautifully decorated, with different color schemes and specially chosen paintings. Many have soaring high ceilings, some have a lavish tub in the large bathroom. One Superior room is a duplex, with the bedroom accessed by a staircase, and a sitting area and bathroom on the ground floor.
Superior rooms enjoy cool tiled floors in the large living space, as well as high-beamed ceilings which emphasize the fact that you are sleeping in an 18th Century hacienda. Three of these rooms have one king bed, and one has two beautiful double canopy beds.
The Deluxe Suites here are beautifully spacious, light and airy. Many have windows all around letting in lots of natural light. Because there is so much greenery surrounding the buildings, this does not compromise your privacy in the room.
Some of these rooms have one king size bed (with two separate mattresses on the one base for added comfort), and others have two double beds. All share the beautiful high beamed ceilings, full-length windows and huge terraces.
These large rooms are of a split level design. On the lower level is a comfortable sofa and chairs, and a large writing desk with mini-bar. On the upper level is the king Size bed and door leading to the bathroom and dressing room.
The terraces feature a Jacuzzi bath, two comfortable sunloungers and a hammock. Some are more private than others, depending on their location within the hotel, but all offer a wonderfully shady retreat with cooling overhead fans.
The bathrooms of the Deluxe Suites aren’t as large as those of the Master Suites, but this is because they have the Hydrotherapy tubs on the terrace outside instead. However, they still have a small area for you to sit by the shower and pleasing decor of warm terracotta colored tiles and textured white stone walls.
The bathrooms are L-shaped, with half being occupied by the wardrobes and vanity unit and the other half the shower area. There are also pretty wooden doors, leading to your outdoor Jacuzzi.
The Master Suites open into large living areas, where you would be forgiven for thinking you had stepped back to colonial times. Antique furniture and high-beamed ceilings give the impression of grandeur, without losing the air of comfort that you would expect.
The bedrooms of the Master Suites are a little smaller and cosier than those of the Superior rooms and Deluxe Suites, as they have the separate living area. These can be more romantic for this reason alone, with soft lighting and beautiful carved wooden beds adding to the sense of luxury and romance.
To add to the hacienda ambiance, some of the suites are furnished with a hammock. Outside, the tiled terraces overlook the tropical gardens of the hotel. They have comfortable chairs and an overhead fan for your comfort.
The indulgent and spacious bathrooms feature large jetted soaking tubs and a walk-in shower. Some suites have skylights to allow natural sunlight to flood the room. Every suite has a pretty vanity area and a stock of soft towels.
Hacienda Xcanatun’s gourmet restaurant Casa de Piedra is acknowledged as one of the finest in the area. Presidents Clinton and Zedillo dined here during their summit meeting in the Yucatan, and many other celebrities have been hosted here.
The restaurant strives to fuse Caribbean, Yucatecan and International flavors, and in doing so has created some truly wonderful dishes. You can experience these wonderful creations on the large terrace, whilst enjoying the exquisite view of the verdant tropical gardens.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to enjoy your food in a rather cooler climate, the stylish interior is fully air conditioned.
There is a wonderful atmosphere inside Casa de Piedra. You can transport yourself back in time and imagine that you are one of the Henequen landlords enjoying lavish feasts in these opulent surroundings.
We like to enjoy our meal here, and then wander to the bar area to relax and unwind with a drink while listening to the music. Note that the restaurant is only open until 9:00pm on Sundays (11:00pm Monday to Saturday).
The North pool is likely to be the first one you see as you find your way around the hotel grounds. It’s located next to the spa, and opposite some of the suites. There’s lots of space, plenty of shade for those who need it, and even some hammocks set up for you to enjoy a true Mexican siesta!
The South Pool is tucked away at the back of the hotel behind the old chapel, and is not to be missed. There is a cascading waterfall feature on the back wall of this pool which is very alluring plus that all-important bar to serve you cold drinks.
The Spa at Hacienda Xcanatun provides an integrated approach to beauty and wellness – therapeutic in nature and undeniably pampering. Holistic Mayan treatments are a key component of the services offered in the airy, light-filled spa decorated in tones of jade green and beige.
Guests enter The Spa through the garden, beside the swimming pool. The full-length glass wall brings the outdoor inside, creating a relaxing and sensual effect before treatment. Soothing and healing herbal teas, fruit drinks, and fruit are served in the reception area. There are comfortable changing/shower rooms, five massage/treatment rooms, and separate steam and relaxation areas for men and women.
The exceptional staff of attentive and professional therapists uses only natural products. The Spa’s specialist for Mayan treatments mixes her own oils and creams from local ingredients, balms and techniques learned from studying with the area’s leading shaman.
Guests may chose to enjoy their Mayan body program in a secluded garden palapa or The Spa. In-suite treatments and massages are available day or evening.
